Growth Scan

The growth ultrasound allows our maternal-fetal doctors to evaluate the baby’s growth within the uterus, including its size, position, and overall development.

What is the growth scan or third-trimester ultrasound?

The growth ultrasound allows our maternal-fetal doctors to evaluate the baby’s growth within the uterus, including its size, position, and overall development.

Additionally, we perform a third structural evaluation focusing on organs that continue to develop until the third trimester, such as the brain, heart, and kidneys.

Our maternal-fetal doctors perform tests and use the most suitable ultrasound technology to identify and rule out anomalies or conditions requiring special attention.

During this study, we will also perform a Doppler ultrasound to assess fetal blood flow and confirm adequate blood circulation.

During which weeks of pregnancy is the growth ultrasound performed?

The growth ultrasound is ideally performed between weeks 32 and 34. However, we may conduct it at other times if we detect specific clinical reasons regarding fetal growth.

We may also third-trimester ultrasound to monitor the baby’s growth over the weeks.

Is any prior preparation required for the growth ultrasound?

Some basic measures help us get better baby photos, such as going to the bathroom to urinate to empty the bladder before the study, and not eating immediately before the consultation.

Is there any risk to the baby associated with the growth ultrasound?

No, ultrasound is completely safe for your pregnancy and for the baby.

This ultrasound is essential for monitoring the baby’s health and comparing its growth to fetal growth standards, ruling out abnormalities such as fetal macrosomia or fetal growth restriction.

It also helps us determine if the baby’s position is suitable for delivery.

We can assess whether the amount of amniotic fluid is average. Through Doppler ultrasound, we can verify that blood flow through the umbilical cord and placenta functions correctly. This means the baby receives sufficient nutrients and oxygen for healthy development.

With the growth ultrasound, we can identify conditions such as intrauterine growth restriction, where the baby may be smaller than expected, or fetal macrosomia, when it is larger than normal, which could indicate other conditions such as gestational diabetes.

It is also possible to detect alterations in the placenta or umbilical cord that could affect the flow of nutrients and oxygen the baby is receiving, as well as the amount of amniotic fluid present in the placenta, which may require medical monitoring.

In the office, you will lie on the examination table, and we will ask you to expose your abdomen so that we can apply the gel that facilitates the movement of the transducer.

This device, essential in any ultrasound, allows us to obtain baby images. Our maternal-fetal doctors analyze the images in real-time and explain to you how the baby’s development and well-being are progressing.

Generally, the duration of the procedure is approximately 30 to 60 minutes.

No, it is not an invasive method. Being an ultrasound study, it poses no risk to your pregnancy or baby. No needles, incisions, or any other type of intervention in the body are required.

No anesthesia is applied for this procedure. It is painless and does not cause discomfort other than a slight sensation of cold caused by the gel.

While we perform the ultrasound, you and your companion can see the baby in real time. During the procedure, our maternal-fetal doctors will explain the findings to you. Within 24 to 48 hours, we will send an official written report with the conclusions and all the images we took of the baby to your email and your doctor’s.
